  • What sized tile spacer should I use for a wall and for a floor?
When tiling walls, Bright Ideas recommend a tile spacer size between 1mm to 3mm. In some situations you may be able to use a 4mm. For floors we recommend any tile spacer sizes between 4mm to 10mm.
  • How do I determine the depth of tile trim I need so it fits directly with my tiles?
When selecting a trim for your tiled installation it is recommended to choose a profile that is between 1.5mm to 2mm deeper than your tiles to allow for the application of adhesive when applying the profile to the wall or floor. Example: If you have a 10mm tile then a 12mm tile trim will be required to accommodate the depth of the tile and the adhesive.
  • What should I use to clean my PVC and aluminium trims?
In most cases PVC and aluminium trims require no special treatment to maintain a healthy appearance. Simply use a soft cloth or sponge alongside warm water. Any harsh chemicals such as bleach or abrasive cleaning agents should be completely avoided as they can harm the profile's appearance.
  • Is there any particular way to apply adhesive using a notched trowel?
For the best results when applying adhesives using notched trowels we recommend holding the trowel at about a 45° angle when applying adhesive to the substrate. By doing this consistently will ensure all your adhesive ridges from tile to tile will sit at the same height.
  • What are the differences between the notch types on trowels?
Squared Notch: The most commonly used type of notched trowel where the notches form square ridges of adhesive when applied to the substrate. Rounded Notch (U Notch): The rounded ridge (when compared to a squared ridge formed by a square notched trowel) makes it easier to force out air and evenly press down ridges beneath large format tiles, or on walls where you have less leverage to firmly set the tile. Where squared ridges tend to collapse over from the top of the ridge and then spread out when setting down and embedding the tile, the rounded ridge spreads outward from the base of the ridge at the substrate level first. This gives less possibility of trapping air beneath the tile for improved adhesion making them recommended for fixing floor tiles. 'V' Notched Trowel: Used for applying vinyl flooring and preferred for the application of very small tiles such as mosaics. 'V' notched trowels are recommended for this case as they help to apply a smaller amount of adhesive thus avoiding over smearing that leads to adhesive squishing or oozing out from the joints.
  • Do I need to seal my tiled surface before grouting?
Yes, it is always recommended to seal tiled surfaces before grouting to avoid mishaps such as tile discolouration, staining and scratching. A versatile range of sealing and cleaning chemicals are available in the LTP Product Range.
  • When sealing tiles, what type of pads should I use?
Emulsifying pads are ideal for applying chemical sealing agents to tiles as they are fully chemical resistant making them the perfect applicator. There are universally two types of pad available: White Pad (Fine): For gentle cleaning of polished and other delicate surfaces. Ideal for working intensive cleaning solutions into tiles, grout and stone surfaces. Black Pad (Coarse): Assists the removal of stubborn films including grout residue from texture surfaces. Not to be used on delicate surfaces as the coarseness of the pad may scratch the surface.
  • Why do I have to use water with diamond hole saws?
Water must always be used alongside diamond hole saws to ensure the drilled holes are clean and precise. The use of water also prolongs the lifespan of the drill bit for multiple cuts as it is recommended to apply water at an interval of roughly every 20-30 seconds to keep the drill piece lubricated. Failing to use water can result in poorly cut holes and can also lead to the drill bit burning out too quickly rendering it useless for further cuts.
  • What is the difference between dry cutting and wet cutting?
Dry Cutting: The ability to use a drill bit or cutting disc without the requirement of water to prevent over exhaustion and poorly made cuts or holes. Angle grinders are prime examples of tools which blades are used for dry cutting purposes. Wet Cutting: The addition of water is required to ensure the drill bit or cutting disc can operate to its full potential to ensure holes and cuts are made without burning out too quickly. Wet cutting is usually involved when cutting through tougher materials such as natural stone as the addition of water helps lubricate the drill piece or blade, helping to prolong their lifespan for optimum cutting and drilling performance.
  • Are epoxy grouts fully waterproof?
Yes, because of their waterproof and stain-resistant properties epoxy grouts are highly recommended for areas prone to moisture and exposure to water such as showers, wetrooms and swimming pools. Upstairs bathroom and shower areas benefit greatly from epoxy based grouts as the epoxy resins and filler powder used to create the grout creates a dense, non-porous material which seals any gaps in the substrate. This is turn prevents water from leaking through making your grouted upstairs bathroom or wetroom completely waterproof.
  • Why is epoxy grout so tough to apply and wash away from tiles?
Epoxy grouts can prove to be challenging to use as unlike cementitious grouts they are less flexible, can be sticky in nature making them harder to apply and in some cases once mixed will begin to harden rapidly. Epoxy grouts are also harder to remove once fully set that can potentially lead to costly mistakes. At Bright Ideas we provide a number of specialized grouting tools for applying and cleaning away epoxy grouts from tiled surfaces which can be found in our Grouting Tools section under the Tiling Tools category.
